Mutts Day is July 31!


It's Mutt's Day!  Mutts deserve their day in the spotlight, as much as a pure breed.
We are not sure how PC the word mutt is, but by definition a mutt is a dog that is of mixed breed.  Almost all of the dogs in a shelter are of a mixed breed.  Pet adoption is also a great way of taking care and proving homes for pets and animals that have been left or sometimes even abused by their previous owners.

My Big Rocks


A quirky reminder of what's important in life

I have a new desk accessory — a plastic pitcher full of big rocks. Every time I glance at it, I smile. My coworkers think I'm nuts. They've always known I walk the line slightly to the left a bit, but my lack of explanation for this oddity on my credenza has caused some murmurs around the water cooler.


Anyway, back to the rocks. First I'll tell you the story behind it, then I'll tell you how you can start your own rock collection. Don't worry ...

This interactive exhibit will teach you about the Aussie ways without having to jump the equator.

An ultimate military style confidence course will feature a 5K run/obstacle course designed to challenge even the most fit individual. The Virginia Zoo, in partnership with the Norfolk Botanical Garden and Nauticus, is putting on the second Zoo Grooves summer concert. At the concert, attendees will be able to submit name suggestions for the new Virginia Zoo Tiger mascot. The winning name will be announced at the Aug. 20 concert. People will also have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction of original art by the Zoo's animal residents. The City of Norfolk will host the first public visit of Japanese Navy ships to the downtown waterfront from Tuesday, August 2, 2011 to Sunday, August 7, 2011.  Three ships comprise the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Training Squadron: JS Kashima (TV3508) 469', JS Asagiri (TV3516) 449', and JS Mineyuki (DD124) 426'.  The squadron includes 750 officers and enlisted sailors, including 150 newly commissioned ensigns in the Japanese Navy. Official welcome ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, August 2, 11:30 am at the Armed Forces Memorial, Town Point Park, adjacent to Nauticus.

Tie Dye FUN!

Every summer the kids and I get together with our friends and have a tie-dye playdate.  While the creations are always unique, the concept is always the same.  Here's how we do it.

What you will need:

prewashed, and dried, clothing items to dye
gumbands
clothespins (optional)
misting spray bottle
buckets for dye (one for each color plus at least one extra)
packets of fabric dye
very warm or hot water
garden hose

Strawberry Bundt Cake

Ingredients:

 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon of salt

1 stick of butter (8 tablespoons)

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup fresh crushed strawberries

powdered sugar for garnish

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
