Groundhog's Day is Thursday February 2, 2012


Each year on Feb. 2 since 1887, thousands of revelers climb atop Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa., to witness the prediction of Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog with the mythical ability of forecasting either an early spring or lengthier winter. With the help of his keepers and protectors, the tuxedo-clad members of the mysterious Inner Circle, Phil shares that annual prediction with the world from the heart of the region appropriately known as the Pennsylvania Wilds.

Suffolk Tourism is partnering with the Early Childhood Education Center and the Suffolk Art Gallery to celebrate Groundhog Day, on Thursday, February 2nd, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Suffolk Visitor Center Pavilion. This free kid-focused event will include a petting zoo by The Teeny Tiny Farm, Groundhog Day crafts, Playdoh® and blocks stations, as well as storytelling. Join WAVY-TV Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler and the VLM Groundhog as they predict the weather during a live broadcast at noon on groundhog day. Phil's Not the Only Weather Predictor Around!

We all know what Punxsutawney Phil will be doing on February 2nd, but how about Staten Island Chuck, Sir Walter Wally, or Buckeye Chuck?  No, these are not NCAA mascots, they’re groundhogs!  Prognosticating groundhogs to be exact.  While you may think that only Phil can tell you whether there will be six more weeks of winter, these professionals and others around the country also take on the job every February 2nd, and are ready to make their predictions this Groundhog Day.

Superbowl Shakers

For the Superbowl, we wanted to do a special craft.  A craft that makes a lot of fantastic noises when your team gets a TOUCHDOWN!!  Your little football fans will get a kick out of these jersey shakers.

What you will need:

- Cardstock or construction paper
- Scissors
- Rice
- Glue and tape
- Crayons, markers, football stickers, computer printouts, football logos, numbers, letters, etc. for decorating the jerseys

Buffalo Chicken Meatballs

Football games just aren't the same with wings.  Well this year put a twist on those messy wings and try these fabulous Buffalo Chicken Meatballs.  The great thing about these is that you don't have people struggling to eat wings, worrying about what to do with their bones and their ridiculously messy face and hands.  I love a neat appetizer!

1 pound of ground chicken
