Museum Day is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian Media in which participating museums across the country open their doors for free to anyone presenting a Museum Day Ticket.

This year, National Museum Day is on Saturday September 25.  Local museums participating include: Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Children's Museum of Virginia, Chrysler Museum, Nauticus, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, Hampton Roads Naval Museum,Old Cape Henry Lighthouse and The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum.

TV-Free America is a national nonprofit organization that was founded in 1994 to raise awareness about the harmful effects of excessive television-watching and encourage Americans to reduce the amount of television that they watch--and replace TV time with activities that lead to more literate, productive lives and engaged citizenship.

National TV-Turnoff Week is about having more fun and turning "on" your life. It's an opportunity to rediscover the wide range of activities that exist when one unplugs from the sedentary, image-based, simplistic and commercial world of television.

announced today the return of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

take place in TowneBank Fountain Park. The afternoon will highlight family

The VBCPS Planetarium and the Back Bay Amateur Astronomers will be bringing night skies closer to everyone.  With astronomical equipment costing thousands of dollars, the two groups offer telescopic views including visible planets, craters on the moon, passing satellites and space stations, and many interesting stars.  Telescopes of various designs are available, including some that are specifically designed to safely observe features on the sun.  Learn to identify constellations you knew were up there, but always wondered where. Learn about the very latest discoveries from a host of spacecraft and satellites & the Hubble Space Telescope with the ViewSpace presentation that will be on display.

DIRECTIONS:

Trace children's hands onto each color foam, glue together in circle.  Place green foam leaves, etc to decorate your handprint leaf wreath.

Attache string to back, and hang!

Macaroni Parents' Night Out


Pink Martini Night at the Chrysler Museum

This year's Pink Martini Night on the Southside will be held on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 from 5:30 - 9 pm at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Downtown Norfolk. The event will include live entertainment, a silent and balloon auction, heavy hors' douevers, dancing and of course, signature pink martinis!

Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 per adult at the door. Come out and enjoy this fabulous evening while raises funds for breast cancer research and education programs!

Easy Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread

Here is a moist bread recipe to use up all your garden zucchini, and the kids won't even know!

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 2 cups grated zucchini
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup walnuts or pecans, optional
