With Thanksgiving being tomorrow, I wanted to express my gratitude to all the MKVB subscribers, columnists, and advertisers.  Without the support, loyalty and positive attitudes of all of you, I woludn't have the motivation to bring you the best newsletter I can week after week.  And MKVB would never had made it to being ranked 54th out of 357 Macaroni Kid newsletters nationwide!  It overwhelms me that MKVB has reached this level in three shorts months, and as I focus on the things I am thankful for in my ...


Think you're having a lot of pie this week?


Check out the world's largest pumpkin pie

Made in New Bremen, Ohio, this pie was 20 feet in diameter and weighed 3,699 pounds!

 

It was the biggest attraction at the 2010 New Bremen Pumpkinfest.

 

The pie was sliced into 5000 pieces and distributed to the crowd.

 

What's the recipe you ask?

 

You need:

 

·        1,212 lbs of canned pumpkin

·        2,796 eggs (or 233 dozen)

·        109 gallons of evaporated milk (and a really good can opener)

·        525 pounds of sugar (a wheel barrel)

·        7 pounds of salt

·        14.5 pounds of cinnamon


Trot like a Turkey this Thanksgiving!


A Turkey Trot is usually a 5 or 10K run/walk held on Thanksgiving Day.  Almost all are family friendly events that allow strollers, kids, and even the dedicated running enthusiast.  Turkey Trots are a great way to create a new healthy tradition with your family to celebrate our "eating" holiday.

It’s the only time of the year that cars get to drive right on the boardwalk - for over 30 blocks!  30,000 vehicles a year make the trek through this holiday wonderland.  This “Fanta-Sea” of lights is sure to dazzle and amaze holiday travelers visiting Virginia Beach.  Hotels create special packages that include free tickets to the light show.  New displays are added each year so it’s never the same show twice!

  The 7,200-square-foot ice rink, on the corner of Monticello Avenue and Freemason Street, is the area’s largest public outdoor skating rink. The rink will be open from Nov. 20, 2010, through Jan. 17, 2011. The skating rink will include a large ice skate selection, including double runners for toddlers and up to size 16 adult; a mini-rink for toddlers; a private party area with picnic table seating for up to 60 people; birthday party packages, ice carving demonstrations and lots more special events.
Where: The ice skating rink is located just outside MacArthur Center, at the corner of Monticello Avenue and Freemason Street.

All aboard! Bring your family and friends for our most popular holiday event. Warm up with a tasty cookie and a warm cup of hot chocolate while you listen to a reading of the Polar Express, then take a tram ride through the Garden of Lights Holiday display.  This event has become a tradition for many families, so book early before it sells out!

This craft my daughter and I did together at the Indian Creek Nature Center in Cedar Rapids.  I have to give a shout out to them because they really have a great program for pre-schoolers, and it was so much fun!  This particular class was "Turkey Talk" and this is the craft we did!

Take a Walk!

Take a Walk!
 
After you have talked about the features of the book cover with your child, take a walk!  A walk, you ask?  Yes…a picture walk! 
Before you even start to read the words of the book, take a “walk” through all of the pictures.  This is so important to preview the story, make predictions about what might happen and familiarize your child with the characters.  Ask questions like:
What do you see happening in the beginning?
Who is in the story?
Where is the story taking place ...
