August 10th is National S’mores day! But let’s face it, any day is a great day to celebrate with a s’more. This delicious and tasty treat is a Girl Scout tradition that has been around since 1927, and is actually rooted in Girl Scout history. The first recorded recipe for a s’more was published in the 1927 Girl Scout Guidebook “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.” A troop leader named Loretta Scott Crew was credited with the recipe, who would reportedly make them by the campfire to feed hungry Girl Scouts.
Today, Girl Scouts all over the world still love making s’mores by the campfire, and indoors as well. There’s no rule on how to make or eat a s’more. Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast will have plenty of ways to try out a s’more during their National S’mores Day event being held on August 10th at A Place for Girls, the council’s regional headquarters and program center. From 10 a.m. to noon, friends in the community are invited to stop by and have some fun with crafts, an outdoor scavenger hunt, make s’more trail mix, and of course, sample a tasty s’more.
Guests will also be able to see a demonstration of a pizza box solar oven in use and learn how to make a s’more with solar power! Thanks to Papa John’s Pizza of Hampton Roads, several guests will walk away with a coupon for a free pizza!
Did you know? Time spent outdoors has been suggested to have restorative benefits and can help with stress reduction and prevention of depression. When kids spend time outside, they explore nature, science, and the environment, which provide opportunities to get inspired, have fun, and be present with their thoughts and surroundings. Additionally, outdoor experiences contribute to better mental wellness, foster confidence and leadership skills, and increase levels of physical activity. Whether you live in an urban, suburban, or rural area, you can experience the benefits and joy of being outside.
Girl Scouts provides opportunities to get outdoors, make friends, explore new things — and have fun! This summer, we invite every girl to take the Girl Scouts Love the Outdoors Challenge, and choose from a list of fun activities to do alone or with friends. Be sure to make one of those activities attending our National S’mores Day celebration on August 10th! The event is free, but registration is requested; learn more and reserve your spot at gsccc.org/smores.
