Tidewater Collegiate Academy at VWU is an innovative homeschool for diverse PK-12th grade students. It was founded over 10 years ago based on a mission to facilitate the development of global citizens equipped with 21st century skills ready to make the world a better place. Students are engaged in authentic, hands-on, thought demanding learning experiences driven by curiosity and adventure. Teachers, mentors, and volunteers are available to guide, support, and encourage students to persevere, ask cool questions, and find meaning in their efforts. The one room schoolhouse, learner directed model allows each student to find their own unique path that resonates with their strengths, talents, and goals without being pressured by outside expectations. The learning doesn’t stop in the summer. Our summer camp programs are designed to let 4th-10th graders have a ton of summer fun while learning in new and interesting ways in a small group community. Our “Global Scholars Leadership Academy” is an overnight program in partnership with the Robert Nusbaum Center at VWU. The campers will spend the night on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan, and spend their days learning to create and facilitate deliberative dialogues that allow members of the community to engage in controversial topics respectfully honoring ideas and perspectives. “Just For Girls”, is also an overnight experience at Virginia Wesleyan University to help middle school girls find their inner strength and connection with others. “Pet Pals” and “Hall of Artists” are traditional day camps focused on how to take care of our furry friends and how they take care of us, and creating art inspired by a variety of artists from different time periods and media. “Night Owls” is a day camp at night with lots of S’mores, glow sticks, and star gazing.
