Get to know this week's Macaroni Mama Jessica, owner of Storybook Bakery

1. Tell us about your business. Storybook Bakery is a custom cake and dessert baking business in Chesapeake, Virginia. We are proud to be a “from scratch” bakery and offer a large range of sweets and desserts for every function, including: weddings, birthdays, military functions, bridal and baby showers, groom’s cakes, dessert tables, edible party favors, and more. Everything is made fresh for each order and customized for every occasion.

2. What do you love most about what you do? I love that I get to be a part of some of the happiest times in people’s lives, especially children. I have three small children and know how excited they can get over something so simple, as a cake. I love being able to help create memories for old and young alike.

3. What do your kids think about what you do? My son is only 1 year old, but my daughters are 4 and 5, and they really get excited about what I do. When I am working on a cake, my oldest daughter wants to know who the cake is for, and thinks that everyone who comes to the door is a “customer”. My youngest daughter likes to play with my tools and eat cake scraps. I would love to open a full scale shop with my family one day.

4. Tell us about how you balance your home business with your family.

Since I own my business, I can set my work schedule at my own pace. I do most of my baking and decorating during the day while my children play or when my older two children are at preschool. My son stays home with me full time. My computer based work is usually done at night, when everyone is asleep. My husband is in the Navy and currently serving aboard the USS Forrest Sherman. He helps me when he is able and his schedule allows. As former military myself and a military spouse, I am used to juggling many aspects of family and work.

5. What can the families in our community gain from your services? As a mother, I understand how many tasks are involved in planning parties for your family, so Storybook Bakery works hard to make ordering your cake, desserts, and party favors simple. Most orders can be placed over the phone or through email. Photos of our sweets are available 24/7 on our website and families can shop from home for their perfect cake. I am also extremely proud to be the Virginia state sponsor and baking partner for the non-profit organization, Icing Smiles. We provide free cakes to children affected with critical illness and their siblings. Icing Smiles’ staff and bakers are all volunteers and services are available in all 50 states. 6. Is there anything you’d like to share about your business with Macaroni Kid readers? All 1st Birthday cakes come with a free 4-inch “smash” cake for the birthday boy/girl! We also have a 10% military discount and deliver to all military bases!
